E-mail change of address service ActiveNames, New York, has closed its business.

The company, founded in 1998, was considered a serious contender among a number of emerging e-mail change of address services including New York-based Return Path and Veripost in Superior, CO.

ActiveNames Closes up Shop

The news was a shock to the handful of employees working in the New York office.

"I came in from a lunch and [co-founder Nimo Steinbock] said the company’s over, go home," Brad Shapiro, vice president of marketing and business development said. "It was a total surprise to me."

Steinbock could not be reached for comment. The circumstances surrounding the shut down were unclear.

When in business ActiveNames had offered a free downloadable application that automatically notifies other contacts when the consumer’s e-mail address changes. The company had partners with various companies that promoted the product or acted as resellers.

Several direct marketers had conducted tests with ActiveNames including Fingerhut.com and coupon Web site Eversave.com.

In February, the company had announced that it was setting up data centers in Europe and the Far East to ensure compliance with exchange privacy laws.
